FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
San Diego, CA – June 2025
We hope you will join SNAP in expanding our mobile spay/neuter services to prevent the birth of many additional thousands of unwanted pets across San Diego County through our 2025 Capital Campaign.
We have exciting news to share!
We’re building a brand-new Neuter Scooter, this time, it’s the NEUTER CRUISER!!
At Spay-Neuter Action Project (SNAP), we believe that every pet deserves a healthy, happy life, and no family should have to choose between financial security and their pet’s well-being. For more than 20 years, we’ve been leading the fight against pet overpopulation in San Diego County, by providing accessible, affordable spay and neuter services through our mobile clinics on SNAP’s Neuter Scooters and as of 2024, at the SNAP East Spay Center in El Cajon.
Thanks to the incredible support from our community of donors and grant funders, SNAP has fixed more than 90,000 pets since 2003, helping to reduce shelter intake and euthanasia rates while strengthening families across the region.
The Need Has Grown— And So Must We
Unfortunately, due to new California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations, SNAP’s original Neuter Scooter had to be retired. The bus was donated to Rocky Mountain Spay + Neuter in Colorado (where it is still legal on the road), and the equipment was moved to SNAP East Spay Center. This mobile clinic served tens of thousands of pets across Central San Diego, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, and National City. Without it, many families are now left without access to life-saving care.
At the same time, the need for affordable spay and neuter services is urgent. The cost of spaying/neutering at private veterinarians has increased substantially over recent years, such that more pet owners than ever cannot afford it. Grateful clients often tell SNAP’s scheduling team that they didn’t know what they were going to do, before they heard about SNAP. Some are in tears as they express their gratitude for SNAP’s help with fixing their pets as well as getting free vaccines, free or $10 microchips, free nail trims, and free exams. SNAP is currently running 32 clinics each month, fixing 25 to 50 pets each day on our SNAP North Neuter Scooter and at the SNAP East Spay Center. Even with both clinics running at full capacity, demand still far outpaces supply—especially in underserved central areas of the county. That’s why we’re launching this “Get on the Bus” Capital Campaign to fund, staff, and equip a new, state-of-the-art mobile clinic by the end of 2025.
Your Support Will Help Us Reach More Pets, More Families, and More Communities
Our goal is to raise an additional $500,000 by December 2025 to complete and deploy the next-generation Neuter CRUISER! Thanks to our seed funders, the J and M McManama 1996 Charitable Trust, the Oberts, and the Anthony W & Delores J DeSio Family Foundation, the work has already begun.
This new unit will allow us to:
- Restore critical services to communities impacted by the loss of our original unit
- Provide free or low-cost surgeries for low-income families
- Reduce shelter overcrowding by preventing accidental litters
- Improve safety and animal welfare across San Diego County
