FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
San Diego, CA – December 1, 2025

San Diego, CA — The County of San Diego, Districts 1 and 2 have awarded two Community Enhancement grants of $7,462 each to Spay-Neuter Action Project (SNAP). The grants will bring four free spay/neuter clinics to Supervisor Paloma Aguirre’s and Supervisor Joel Anderson’s constituents. Pet dogs and cats of 60 low-income District 1 residents and 60 low-income residents of District 2 unincorporated areas will receive free spay or neuter surgeries, as well as a free pre-anesthetic health exam, vaccinations, nail trimming, flea and tick treatment, deworming, pain medication, recovery collars, cardboard carriers, and wound care as needed. SNAP provides microchips for pets whose owners want them for only $10. The surgeries will be done on SNAP’s mobile “Neuter Scooter” surgical suite parked for two days each at the Otay Mesa-Nestor Branch Library and the Southern Indian Health Council Alpine Clinic in early 2026.

The need for affordable spay/neuter has never been more urgent. San Diego County’s animal shelters continue to be overcapacity. Local shelters and rescue organizations are caring for far more animals than their facilities were designed to house. SNAP applauds the leadership of Supervisors Aguirre and Anderson in recognizing the important of prevention through spaying and neutering, which saves taxpayer dollars spent on housing, medicating, treating, and euthanizing homeless animals due to overpopulation. Spaying and neutering also helps to reduce pets’ risk of developing cancer and behavioral problems such as house soiling, roaming, and aggression. It can help keep pets and their human families together longer, by extending the pets’ life expectancy by an average of two years.

About The San Diego County Community Enhancement Program (CEP)
The San Diego County Community Enhancement Program (CEP) is funded by Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) revenues. The goal of the program is to stimulate tourism, promote the economy, and create jobs and/or a better quality of life.

About Spay-Neuter Action Project (SNAP)
SNAP was the first organization in the San Diego region to implement programs to reduce the number of companion animals euthanized in local animal shelters. SNAP brings no- and low-cost spay/neuter services directly to communities struggling with chronic pet overpopulation. SNAP is recognized as the primary provider of affordable spay/neuter for San Diego County, and has sterilized more than 95,000 pets since 2003. The San Diego Department of Animal Services has recognized the positive impact that SNAP has made on reducing pet overpopulation, including in the unincorporated areas of the county where few animal control officers patrol and the need for accessible, affordable spay/neuter is especially great.
