The County of San Diego has awarded two Neighborhood Reinvestment Program grants to Spay-Neuter Action Project (SNAP). These grants of $12,000 each helped SNAP to build a new state-of-the-art mobile surgical suite, which will launch this month. The new “Neuter Scooter” will join forces with the current Neuter Scooter and the SNAP East Spay Center in El Cajon to enable SNAP to expand low- and no-cost spay/neuter, vaccination, and microchipping services to more underserved areas all over San Diego County.
The need for affordable spay/neuter continues to be urgent. San Diego County’s animal shelters remain overcapacity. Spay/neuter prices at private veterinary practices are out-of-reach for many low-income and even middle-income residents. SNAP is recognized as the primary provider of affordable spay/neuter for San Diego County, and will meet the milestone of sterilizing 100,000 pets this fall.
Affordable spay/neuter benefits the community, pet owners, and pets. Spaying and neutering help to reduce pets’ risk of developing reproductive cancers, and prevent behavioral problems as well as unwanted litters and shelter intake. Prevention through spaying and neutering saves taxpayer dollars spent on housing, medicating, treating, and euthanizing homeless animals due to overpopulation. SNAP’s clients are very appreciative of being able to receive this important care at an affordable price, and SNAP is very grateful to the County of San Diego for their continued support of our mission to prevent pet overpopulation. SNAP was the first organization in the San Diego region to implement programs to reduce the number of companion animals euthanized in local animal shelters. SNAP brings no- and low-cost spay/neuter services directly to communities struggling with chronic pet overpopulation. SNAP is recognized as the primary provider of affordable spay/neuter for San Diego County, and has sterilized more than 95,000 pets since 2003. The San Diego Department of Animal Services has recognized the positive impact that SNAP has made on reducing pet overpopulation, including in the unincorporated areas of the county where few animal control officers patrol and the need for accessible, affordable spay/neuter is especially great.
